Useful professional development begins with a specific teacher decision, not a fashionable topic or a required number of hours. The same format can be productive in one context and wasteful in another. A workshop may introduce a routine; a coach, team, or inquiry cycle may be needed to adapt it, practice it, and study what happens next.

The ten examples below are hypothetical design patterns. They describe no SimplyPD programs and promise no results. Each connects a learning goal to a format, classroom application, evidence check, workload, and leadership condition. How to use these examples

Begin with a current problem: unclear student reasoning, uneven participation, a new curriculum, inaccessible materials, weak feedback, or a classroom routine that consumes learning time. Define what teachers need to learn and what evidence would support the next decision. Then choose a format that fits the work.

Federal law describes professional development for applicable federal programs as sustained, intensive, collaborative, job-embedded, data-driven, and classroom-focused, among other features. That definition does not make every activity appropriate or establish a national renewal rule. Requirements vary by state, license, role, and cycle; teachers should confirm recognition with the responsible state or local authority.

1. Calibrate feedback with student writing

Situation: A grade-level team sees inconsistent feedback and revision expectations across classrooms.

Learning design: Teachers study an applicable writing recommendation, examine anonymized work under local privacy rules, apply a shared protocol, and compare feedback decisions. They then test one feedback routine in class and return with a permitted work sample or implementation note.

Evidence: Agreement on criteria, changes in feedback language, student revision patterns, and questions that remain. These observations support the next cycle; they do not by themselves prove an effect on achievement.

Workload and conditions: Protected meeting time, access to representative work, a facilitator who can manage calibration, and clarity that developmental samples are not hidden personnel evaluation.

2. Rehearse a mathematics representation routine

Situation: Teachers want students to connect diagrams, equations, and verbal explanations during problem solving.

Learning design: A facilitator models one routine aligned to the grade’s mathematics content. Teachers solve a task, anticipate student strategies and misconceptions, rehearse prompts, and adapt the task for an upcoming lesson. A short coaching or peer-debrief cycle follows.

Evidence: Lesson plans, selected representations, teacher questions, and student explanations collected under policy. The relevant IES practice guide can inform the design, but its recommendations must be used within the guide’s grade and evidence scope.

Workload and conditions: Content-specific facilitation, curriculum materials in the room, planning time, and no requirement to adopt a routine before teachers can examine fit.

3. Strengthen academic-language supports

Situation: A content team wants multilingual learners to participate in grade-level discussion and writing without reducing the intellectual demand.

Learning design: Teachers identify the language demands of an upcoming task, study relevant IES guidance, design explicit language supports, rehearse interaction structures, and plan how to remove supports when they are no longer needed.

Evidence: Task revisions, participation patterns, student explanations, and teacher reflection. Interpretation should account for content knowledge, language development, classroom climate, and opportunity to participate.

Workload and conditions: Collaboration between content and language-development expertise, planning time, and respect for students’ identities and linguistic resources.

4. Conduct a lesson-study cycle

Situation: A team needs to understand how students approach one difficult concept.

Learning design: Teachers define a learning question, jointly plan a research lesson, anticipate responses, observe agreed evidence, and revise the lesson. The observation focuses on the shared question rather than rating the teacher.

Evidence: Predictions, observation notes, student strategies, revised materials, and the team’s next hypothesis. One lesson is local evidence, not a general causal finding.

Workload and conditions: Release or common-planning time, a clear observation protocol, consent and privacy safeguards, and leadership protection from evaluative misuse.

5. Use coaching to implement a new curriculum

Situation: A school has adopted materials, but teachers need support with sequencing, task selection, and responsive adjustments.

Learning design: A coach and teacher identify one near-term implementation goal, co-plan, review permitted evidence, rehearse a decision, and debrief after use. The cycle repeats with gradually reduced support.

Evidence: Planning choices, use of core materials, documented adaptations, teacher questions, and student-task evidence where appropriate. Fidelity should not mean ignoring accessibility or student need.

Workload and conditions: Defined coach role, confidentiality boundaries, regular time, access to materials, and a process for resolving tensions between curriculum expectations and classroom evidence.

6. Improve a classroom behavior routine

Situation: Transitions are inconsistent and consume instructional time.

Learning design: Teachers use an applicable behavior-practice guide to define and teach one observable routine, rehearse prompts and acknowledgments, plan equitable responses, and review implementation data.

Evidence: Time used, clarity of expectations, teacher consistency, student participation, and unintended effects. The review should not reduce disability-related, cultural, relational, or environmental needs to simple compliance.

Workload and conditions: Administrator support, alignment with student services, accessible expectations, and a route for individualized support when a universal routine is insufficient.

7. Redesign a unit for accessibility

Situation: Teachers find that students encounter avoidable barriers in materials, directions, or response options.

Learning design: A teacher team audits one upcoming unit, identifies essential goals, reviews barriers, and redesigns selected materials or assessment pathways. Specialists contribute within their roles; the process does not replace individualized decisions required by law or student plans.

Evidence: Barrier log, revised materials, student access patterns, teacher workload, and issues requiring specialist or administrative action.

Workload and conditions: Accessible source files, collaboration time, assistive-technology support where relevant, and clear responsibility for remediation.

8. Run a formative-assessment inquiry

Situation: Teachers need faster evidence about whether students understand a concept before a larger assessment.

Learning design: Each teacher writes one learning goal and success criterion, designs a brief evidence-gathering task, anticipates responses, and preplans instructional actions. The team compares what the task revealed and revises it.

Evidence: Quality of the prompt, distribution of responses, instructional decisions taken, and whether the next task yields more useful information. Avoid turning the cycle into collection without action.

Workload and conditions: Short recurring meetings, permission to revise pacing, and a narrow question that can be studied within normal instruction.

9. Build a subject-specific professional learning community

Situation: Teachers of the same subject are distributed across schools and have few opportunities to study practice together.

Learning design: A facilitated community selects one recurring instructional question, reads a primary or authoritative source, examines tasks or work, tries one bounded change, and returns with evidence. Rotating facilitation can distribute ownership.

Evidence: Participation, quality of shared artifacts, changes in planning, classroom application, and whether the group’s question advances.

Workload and conditions: Predictable time, a focused scope, useful artifacts rather than meeting minutes alone, and district support for cross-school access.

10. Plan a career-development pathway

Situation: A teacher is considering mentoring, coaching, instructional leadership, certification, or graduate study.

Learning design: The teacher maps the target role, required and preferred qualifications, evidence of readiness, available learning, time, cost, and opportunities to practice the work. A supervisor or relevant authority confirms which credentials or experiences are recognized.

Evidence: A verified requirement map, portfolio gaps, completed practice, feedback, and a next decision. Participation does not guarantee selection, assignment, licensure, salary change, or employment outcome.

Workload and conditions: Transparent requirements, equitable access to stretch opportunities, protected mentoring time, and no pressure to pursue leadership as the only form of growth.

Compare the examples before choosing one

Use six questions:

  1. Does the example address a problem teachers recognize?
  2. Does it match the subject, grade, role, curriculum, and student context?
  3. Will teachers actively plan, rehearse, analyze, create, or receive feedback?
  4. Are time, materials, facilitation, access, and follow-through funded and scheduled?
  5. Is the evidence proportionate, permitted, and useful for a next decision?
  6. Are credit, renewal, or career claims confirmed by the responsible authority?

Required learning can still be meaningful when leaders explain the need, involve teachers in design choices, differentiate by role, and provide time for application. Voluntary learning can still be weak when it lacks evidence, relevance, feedback, or implementation support.

Evaluate without overclaiming

Keep participation, learning, application, and outcomes separate. Attendance records show participation. A plan, rehearsal, or analysis may show learning. Changed materials or routines may show application. Student evidence may inform an outcome question, but many factors affect it. Stronger claims require stronger designs and alternative explanations.

Teachers need developmental space to test and revise. Leaders need enough evidence to decide whether to continue, adapt, support, or stop an initiative. Agree in advance about what will be collected, who can see it, and whether it is developmental or evaluative.

Choose the next useful cycle

Select one example only after defining the need and implementation conditions. Keep the first cycle narrow enough to finish, then use evidence to decide what comes next.
